BLS Identifies 30 Fastest Growing U.S. Occupations for 2008-2018, 15.3-Million New Jobs Expected

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its EMPLOYMENT PROJECTIONS – 2008-18 on December 10th which projects the creation of 15.3 million new jobs by 2018 but a continued loss of manufacturing and farming jobs. 

Biomedical engineers is the fastest growing employment sector, expected to increase by 72% over the ten year period.   Network systems and data communications analysts rank second with a growth of 53.4%.  Home health care aides take the third  spot with an expected upward change in employment of 50%. That is followed by personal and home care aides at 46% growth.  Financial examiners round out the top five with an expected growth of 41%. 

Medical jobs rank 6 through 9: medical scientists (40%), physicians assistants (39%), skin care specialists (39%) and biochemists and biophysicists (37.4%).  Athletic trainers (37%) round out the top 10

Chart 4 from the Employment Report shows job growth in thousands of people by major occupational group.   About 5.2 million jobs will be professional and related.  About 4 million jobs will be in service related industries.  Farming and production sectors will continue to shed jobs. Nanotechnology jobs are also expected to be a fast growing segment.
