Torture-tested Ford EcoBoost V6 engine torn down at Detroit Auto Show
1/18/11 |
by Jeremy Korzeniewski
Exactly as promised, Ford sent a couple of technicians to the show floor at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in front of a live audience to disassemble the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that was torture-tested for the equivalent of a few hundred thousand miles of rigorous duty on the dyno and in the engine bay of various F-Series trucks.
How'd it fair? Rather well, we'd say, and it managed to churn out 364 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque on the dyno after all the abuse it took. That matches up rather well with the factory ratings of 365 horses and 420 lb-ft.
As you might expect, there was a good amount of carbon build-up on the piston crowns and the valves – think of how much dust was surely ingested over the course of 1,062 miles of the Baja 1000 race, which this engine took part in, finishing first overall in its class – along with a 13-percent loss on one cylinder during the leak-down test. All other initial measurements were well within factory tolerances, and Ford will continue testing each individual piece from this engine to ensure its durability.
No doubt about it, this is an impressive showing for the EcoBoost engine.
LUXGEN7 SUV Sports+ and MPV Elegance+
The Taiwanese automaker Luxgen has unveiled the new Luxgen7 SUV Sports+ and MPV Elegance+ at the 2011 Automobile Exhibition from Taipei today.
The SUV Sports+ acknowledged a new two tone paint design with black and red paintwork for the exterior, blackened headlights and taillights, 20 inch alloy wheels and also a new exhaust system with four tailpipes. The interior is now sportier and it continues the black and red color theme with black and red suede seats, a suede steering wheel, aluminum paddles and a carbon fiber console trim.
The MPV Elegance+ only received a new set of 20 alloy wheels outside but the interior upgrades were pretty significant. Luxgen has developed the exterior with high end luxury goodies such as standard diamond quilted two-tone suede seats, a brown leather steering wheel and a classic walnut wood trim.

Tesla has by now made three “alpha build” Model S cars and all of them were assembled at the company’s head office in Palo Alto, sunny California. The bodies of the car were made by a dealer located at Michigan. The company will test these cars to learn the good and bad parts of the subsystems and components. Hopefully, in the near future Tesla Motors will enter the “beta builds” stage by production the cars at its factory located in Fremont, California. The cars that will roll out of the factory will be most likely used for federal crash-testing and documentation as well as for various additional tests and system inclusion.
The Tesla S will feature an aluminum body and the company targets a curb weight of about 4,000 pounds, alike to the Audi A8, another all-aluminum model that is considered to be a benchmark for Tesla’s car. Another promise made by the company regards the fact that the S will have the “best in class” aerodynamics from a body designed internally with the aid of Franz Von Holzhausen, the guy responsible for the beautiful Pontiac Solstice and for the bold Mazda Furai concept car. In addition, the aerodynamics of the car will be further tested by Robert Palin (ex Williams F1 driver) and Shaun Johnson (ex Ferrari driver).
The officials at the company promised some time ago that the S will be able to offer a range of up to 300 miles. In addition, they said that the car will feature all the extravagance of a BMW 7-series and space for seven passengers. Speaking of the interior cabin, I in fact doubt that seven people will fit in the car, perhaps five adults and two midgets. Moving on, the company acknowledged $465 million from the United States Department of Energy for building the S model.

The famous record-breaking Veyron supercar is about to crunch into the hand that feeds them by ending its production. But Bugatti plans on spending their moment building superfluous sedans. This New Bugatti luxury sedan (picture above) is anticipated to debut sometime in 2014, but not much information is acknowledged about the model. Thanks to the German publication, Spiegel, who have some just more informations/details to share.
Audi and Porsche are in charge for all the luxury models in the Volkswagen Group, the future Bugatti sedan will end up being built on the same platform as the Audi A8. Being a Bugatti copy, it will be restricted to only 300 units and will carry a price tag like to the Veyron, meaning that only few people will have the chance to actually drive one. The sedan model will feature design elements from the Bugatti’s latest concept, the 16 C Galibier. The 16 C concept features the traditional Bugatti radiator complimented by big round LED lit headlamps and the clamshell running the length of the vehicle, which became synonymous with the brand identity under Jean Bugatti in the Type 57.

BMW Unscripted follows Tiffany Coates around the globe
1/3/11 |
by Zach Bowman
The last time we heard from BMW Unscripted, an ancient 5 Series was stalking the tall grass of South Africa in search of meerkats. Now the company has turned its attention to Tiffany Coates and her BMW R80GS. The duo have traversed the globe together, ranging over five continents and covering untold miles in the process. For Coates, no country or region is off limits, and she's spent time everywhere from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Alaska and Australia. Her travel is impressive, without a doubt, though we're more taken with the perspective that her gallivanting has given her.
"People always assume that the world is full of dangerous places, and they think, and they say as well, that I'm mad to go travelling where I do. I always replay, 'but, 99.9 percent of people in the world are really nice, decent people like you and I.'"
We can think of a few politicians that could use some time in the saddle of an R80GS. Hit the jump to have a look at a slice of Coates' life on the road, and remember not to let your fear rule you, people. There's a whole world out there just waiting to meet you.
