Known for reliability, Honda's CR-V has always scored well on the Kiplinger value scale. The 2008 model won Best in Class Small Crossover for its spacious interior, loads of cargo room and great fuel economy. A 2008 LX now costs $4,900 less, on average, at dealers than the original sticker price.

Best Used Cars 2011

Bargains in used cars are increasingly harder to find. Fewer new-car sales over the past couple of years meant fewer trade-ins and vehicles coming off lease.

Plus, in the wake of the recession, buyers turned to used cars in a big way, tightening supply even more.
We picked ten vehicles -- seven sedans, two SUVs and one convertible -- that received top scores in Kiplinger's rankings for performance, value and safety, get high marks for reliability, and won’t drain your wallet at the gas pump.

Dealer and private-party prices are based on actual transactions reported by Edmunds.com for previously owned vehicles considered to be in "clean" condition and driven an average of 12,000 miles a year. We also include the certified used price of each vehicle, based on actual sales. Certified vehicles pass a rigorous inspection and include a warranty that goes beyond the car's original warranty.

Palin doc headed for PPV as ticket sales plummet

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) - With its Sarah Palin documentary "The Undefeated" increasing its playdates by 40 percent this weekend, only to watch box office revenue decline by more than 63 percent, distributor Arc Entertainment announced Sunday that the film will soon be available on pay per view.

The movie played in 14 Tea Party-friendly locations this weekend -- up from the 10 in which it opened last week -- but grossed just $24,000.

Starting September 1, subscribers to DirecTV, Dish Network and Time Warner can see the true Horatio Alger story of an Alaska woman's rise from self-described "hockey mom" to gubernatorial dropout to conservative cable news bastion talking head, all in the comfort of their own home.

In addition, the film will launch on DVD October 4 with a shipment of 250,000 units.

As for the theatrical run, the distributor insists it will continue through August and September.

A "special edition" DVD containing additional new content will be sold only in Walmart stores.

Written and directed by Stephen K. Bannon and produced by Victory Film Group co-founder Glenn Bracken Evans and Dan Fleuette, "The Undefeated" was independently financed by Victory Film Group and its partners.

The film debuted theatrically to multiple sold-out runs and enthusiastic audience support with weekend per-screen averages above $11,000 in top markets. The film was rushed to select digital theaters in only three weeks, and was marketed entirely through social media and grassroots efforts with virtually no traditional media spend.

The film includes leading prominent political commentators Mark Levin, Tammy Bruce and Andrew Breitbart as well as conservative activists Kate Obenshain, Sonnie Johnson and Jamie Radtke. Additionally, the film features interviews with Alaskan civil servants, elected officials and advisors who were involved in Alaskan politics during Governor Palin's tenure. http://www.thewrap.com/movies/article/sarah-palin-doc-undefeated-bottoms-out-24000-distributor-opts-pay-view-29410

Mike Medavoy making movie about Chilean miners

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) - The Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days last year have sold their life rights to producer Mike Medavoy, who will begin production on a movie about the 33 men this year.

Jose Rivera, who wrote the screenplay to "The Motorcycle Diaries," is attached to write.

"Like millions of people around the world, I was completely engrossed watching the rescue at Copiapo. At its heart, this is a story about the triumph of the human spirit and a testament to the courage and perseverance of the Chilean people. I can't think of a better story than this one to bring to the screen," Medavoy said in a written statement.

In the statement, one of the miners, Juan Andros Illanes said, "We consider this to be a great step toward the realization of a film based on our experience in the mine. This is the only official and authorized film about what we lived in the San Jose mine. Much of our story has never been told."

Medavoy and the vice president of his Phoenix Pictures, Edward McGurn, will produce through Medavoy's new company, Half Circle.

Medavoy, who was born in Shanghai, China in 1941, lived in Chile from 1947 to 1957.

The 33 miners are represented by WME and the law firm of Arent Fox in the United States and Carey y CÌa in Chile. Jose Rivera is represented by ICM.

Production on the film is scheduled to start in 2012.

"Animal House", raunchy '80s comedies get Blu-ray debut

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Four classic comedies make their Blu-ray debut in the next two weeks, reminding moviegoers that raunchy comedy was alive and well long before "The Hangover" franchise, and films like "Bridesmaids."

But "Animal House" (1978) and "The Blues Brothers" (1980) starring the late John Belushi, and high school comedies "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982) and "Dazed and Confused" (1993) have more than just sentimental appeal.

Hollywood casting director Paul Ventura believes these films have become funnier and more popular 30 years on, partly because of the fortunes of many of their young, fledgling actors.

"All these movies brilliantly represented their times, but you can look back on them today and realize they hold just as many truths now as they did back then," Ventura told Reuters. "They had comic stars who could pull off social anarchy and still be lovable."

"Fast Times at Ridgemont High", set to be released on August9, had three future Academy Award winners among its cast -- Nicolas Cage, Forest Whitaker, and Sean Penn in a rare comedy turn as the quintessential stoned surfer dude Jeff Spicoli.

"Animal House", out on July 26, provided an early glimpse of Kevin Bacon, while "Dazed and Confused" (set in the mid-1970s) gave the first major screen time to three other upcoming stars: Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich and Matthew McConaughey.

And then there was Belushi."

Belushi's "Animal House" screen debut earned him the cover of Newsweek magazine, and his iconic status was cemented with his dark-suited, dark sunglass-clad prisoner-turned-singer in "The Blues Brothers".

Belushi died in 1982 at age 33 of heroin and cocaine poisoning.

"It's ironic that John didn't do drug-oriented humor. During the making of 'The Blues Brothers' John's drug abuse was scary in the amount of his intake," John Landis, who directed both "Animal House" and "The Blues Brothers", told Reuters.

"John was an excellent actor who always needed strong direction. Without his drug problem he could have done anything, from heart-touching drama to the crazy, zany comedy Jackie Gleason did," Landis said.

"As for the legacy of these movies I can only answer with a quote from the great filmmaker John Huston, who wisely said 'Motion picture directors, prostitutes and buildings get respectable with age.'"

Studio sets release date for Jason Reitman's "Young Adult"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) - Paramount has set a December 9 limited release date for Jason Reitman comedy "Young Adult."

The movie will go into wide release on December 16, 2011.

"Young Adult" is about a fiction writer who, after her divorce, goes back to her small Minnesota hometown. There, she tries to get back together with her ex-boyfriend, now a married father.

Diablo Cody wrote and produced the movie, which stars Charlize Theron and Patrick Wilson.

Theron, Lianne Halfon, Mason Novick and Russell Smith also produced the film.

Fox scores movie rights to ESPN's oral history book

By Brent Lang

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) - As Keith Olbermann settles into life on a significantly smaller stage, ESPN, the network that made his name, may be heading to the big screen.

Fox has optioned the film rights to "ESPN: Those Guys Have All the Fun," James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales' oral history of the sports media empire, TheWrap has confirmed.

The pair interviewed everyone from hosts such as Chris Berman to columnists such as Bill Simmons to come up with their behind-the-scenes look at the early days of ESPN. There's also a lot of space devoted to the temperamental Olbermann's antics, which could make the role of the newly-minted Current TV anchor a plum part for any star.

Michael De Luca, Trigger Street's Dana Brunetti and Julie Yorn will produce the film. De Luca and Brunetti collaborated on last year's Best Picture nominee "The Social Network," while Yorn produced "Red Riding Hood" and "Unstoppable.

Mercedes E350 BlueTEC

This is the most-efficient version of Mercedes' elegant and accommodating midsize E-Class sedan, and it leverages its 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 engine for V-8-grade off-the-line acceleration with 210 horsepower and a generous 400 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and efficiently. Buyers can upgrade the base comfort-oriented suspension to a sport package for improved handling and specific upgrades at no difference in price, which starts at just over $51,000. It's rated at 22/33 mpg.

Lexus RX 450h

Available in front- and all-wheel-drive versions, the stylish midsize RX 450h hybrid luxury crossover SUV is quicker and gets better mileage than its gasoline powered equivalent with its 295-horsepower electrified 3.5-liter V-6 powertrain. It remains both practical and a pleasure to drive, with a spacious and comfortable wood-trimmed five-passenger cabin that includes 10 airbags. Starting at around $44,000, high-tech options include a head-up display that projects pertinent data onto the windshield in the driver's line of sight. It's rated at 32/28 mpg.

Lincoln MKZ

Lincoln's version of the Ford Fusion Hybrid features formal chrome-capped styling, and treats its occupants to a more luxurious interior. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor generate a V6-like 191 horsepower, and the car can run at speeds up to 47 mph solely on battery power. A novel dashboard display helps motorists maximize their fuel efficiency. It comes with a long list of standard convenience features that includes heated and cooled front seats. Best of all, the MKZ is the only hybrid that's priced on a par with its gasoline-powered equivalent at about $35,000. It's rated at 41/36 mpg.

Lexus HS 250h

Lexus' midsize five-passenger hybrid-powered luxury sedan is more handsomely styled than its cousin at Toyota, the Prius. Though it can't match that model's fuel economy, it's more refined and delivers more luxury-car-like comfort and performance. A 2.4-liter gas/electric powertrain produces 187 horsepower, with comfort-tuned ride and handling characteristics. In a nod to the car's "green" nature, around 30 percent of its cabin and trunk materials are so-called bioplastics that are responsible for 20 percent less carbon dioxide emissions. It starts at around $36,000 and is rated at 35/34 mpg.

BMW 335d

The "clean diesel" version of the acclaimed 3 Series sedan is both efficient and sporty, with a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel inline-six-cylinder engine producing 265 horsepower with a whopping 425 pound-feet of torque that ensures quick launches. Driving the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission, this engine can take the 335d to 60 mph in just under seven seconds, which is roughly on a par with the 335i gasoline version. Superior suspension and steering systems enable adept cornering abilities that reward a skilled driver at every turn, while an available M Sport package turns the 335d into an even racier package. Priced at around $44,500, it's rated at 23/36 mpg.

Luxury Cars That Don't Guzzle Gas

The terms “luxurious” and “economical” needn’t be mutually exclusive. Whether you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint or are just tired of having your pocket picked at the pump, there’s a growing number of top-shelf models on the market that boast top fuel efficiency. And we’re not talking about oddball six-figure hybrids that save a few mpg for the sake of environmental street cred among one’s peers – these are mainstream luxury cars that get at least 30 mpg and give up little in terms of either performance or comfort.

For instance, the BMW 528i is not only one of the most pleasurable-to-drive midsize luxury cars, it’s also among the most fuel-efficient. A manual transmission is standard for enthusiasts with a responsive eight-speed automatic transmission available at no extra cost for the clutch-averse. Cutting-edge amenities like a rearview camera with top-down side-view perspectives for easier parking and an infrared Night Vision system make it one of the best-selling luxury cars on the road. It’s base-priced at around $45,500 and is rated at 22/32 mpg.
For those looking to buy American, the Lincoln MKZ hybrid (Lincoln’s version of the Ford Fusion Hybrid) treats its occupants to a luxurious interior while presenting onlookers with a fierce and edgy facade. The car can run at speeds up to 47 mph solely on battery power. Best of all, the MKZ is the only hybrid that’s priced on a par with its gasoline-powered equivalent at about $35,000. It’s rated at 41/36 mpg.

Whoever came up with the moniker “gas guzzler” may have to rethink how they define SUVs thanks to the Lexus RX 450h’s 32/28 mpg rating. Available in front- and all-wheel-drive versions, the stylish midsize hybrid luxury crossover SUV is quicker and gets better mileage than its gasoline powered equivalent. Starting at around $44,000, it remains both practical and a pleasure to drive, with a spacious and comfortable wood-trimmed five-passenger cabin that includes 10 airbags.

Otherwise, here's a few more examples of luxury cars that won't nickel-and-dime you at the pump:

Volkswagen Beetle

The classic Volkswagen Type 1 is still one of the most recognized cars in the world, although its heyday fell in the 1960s. New Beetles launched in 1998, and Volkswagen is introducing a new Beetle set to debut this fall, this one a bit more sleek in design with a navigation system and ambient interior lighting.

“In the 1990s, Volkswagen saw the way to fix its waning reputation: by bringing back some of its most famous badges in the U.S., where sales were hurting,” Padgett explains. “The Rabbit returned, only to once again become the Golf; the Microbus flirted with reality a couple of times, and still remains in limbo. But the Beetle returned, and for 2012 it's being completely revamped with an eye to capturing more male buyers by way of better performance and a tougher-looking exoskeleton.”

Debuted: 1938

Returned: 1998

Current MSRP: $19,500

Mini Cooper Countryman

This lesser-known Mini model, the Countryman, was called an estate car in the 1960s and sometimes featured exterior wood paneling. Fast forward a few decades and it’s now called a crossover SUV.

The new Countryman has some car-derived parts, means the Mini Cooper' range of four-cylinder and turbo-four engines. “Real off-road capability doesn't mean this is for trails only,” Padgett says. “The Countryman's handling does an uncanny job at mimicking that of the smaller Coopers.”

Debuted: 1961

Returned: 2011

Current MSRP: $21,650 - $26,950

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

This luxury vehicle with its unmistakable gullwing is new to the States this year, but is the spiritual successor to a previous gullwinged Mercedes, the 300SL, which debuted in 1954.

“Mercedes-Benz wants you to know its latest supercar owes every inspiration to the racing gem that gave it timeless street cred in the 1950s,” said Padgett. “The new gullwing does indeed have doors that rise to the sky—along with some underpinnings that would have been the next Dodge Viper, if Chrysler and Daimler had made their marriage work.”

Debuted: 1954 (as the 300 SL)

Returned: 2011

Current MSRP: $183,000

Ford Taurus

“It was the car that saved Ford in the mid-1980s, but by the late 1990s, the Taurus badge had lost its meaning, thanks to an overly ovoid redesign that gave up interior room and traditional good looks,” said Padgett. The Taurus was discontinued as of the 2007 model year.

The famous Taurus name returned when Ford debuted its large family sedan for the 2010 model year, as well as the SHO performance edition, which Padgett calls “a revival twofer that's brought domestic car shoppers back into the fold after all.”

Debuted: 1986

Returned: 2010

Current MSRP: $26,000 - $38,500

Buick Regal

“The Regal might bring back memories of the 1980s, of mullets and of turbo GNX versions,” says Padgett. Not so anymore! The new Regal is one of the first products of post-bankruptcy GM.

“The Regal was supposed to be the next Saturn Aura,” Padgett explains. “Instead, it's a great redirect for the future of the Buick brand, with European handling and styling, and a new turbocharged, manual-transmission version to woo enthusiasts in need of four doors.”

Debuted: 1973

Returned: 2011

Current MSRP: $27,000

Ford Explorer

The Explorer spent most of the past decade ducking scandal, after its Firestone tire recall debacle nearly killed the name in 2001. Padgett says the Explorer “limped along through a rather successful redesign in 2002, just in time for SUVs to fall out of favor.”

But now it's enjoying another revival in the Ford lineup, featuring some car components under its SUV-ish body. “It's never been better,” Padgett says, citing improved fuel economy, a new turbo four-cylinder for better gas mileage. The panel at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show agreed: they named it Truck of the Year.

Debuted: 1990

Returned: 2011

Current MSRP: $28,360

Fiat 500

The feisty Italian import Fiat 500 is returning to America with a 2012 model after a 27-year absence. “Not many drivers have fond memories of the Fiat brand, which evacuated America in the late 1970s, leaving behind bad memories of X1/9 sportscars that burned, and 124 roadsters that failed to light any fire,” observes Padgett

“While it's in charge at Chrysler these days, [the brand is] also bringing back its sprightly 500 minicar to the mix, with great fuel economy at just the right time in our automotive history.”

Debuted: 1957

Returned: 2012

Current MSRP: $16,000

Chevrolet Camaro

Whether it’s a pony car or a muscle car, the Camaro has always been one cool ride. Well—almost always. “GM didn't even sell a Camaro from 2003 to 2009, but it stuck with plans to bring back the storied nameplate even through its difficult bankruptcy,” says Padgett.

The new resurrected Camaro comes in coupe, convertible, and hot SS versions. And as Padgett points out, this comeback kid is outselling the Ford Mustang this year.

Debuted: 1967

Returned: 2010

Current MSRP: $23,000 - $32,000

Throwback Cars

Times change, tastes change, popular attributes and features in personal vehicles change. Once-indefatigable SUVs fall out of favor, as smaller more fuel economic cars come back with a vengeance. But no matter what the current trends dictate, it seems that there’s always room for a stylish sports car. So yes, once-popular cars do get retired, but sometimes come back.

Inspired by the introduction of the new (no longer known as the "New Beetle") Beetle, we consulted Marty Padgett, Editorial Director for TheCarConnection.com, for a list of comeback cars. See some of the biggest revivals below.

12 Concept Cars Headed for the Dealership

At the end of auto-show season there's a typical letdown. Lots of fancy sheet metal was shown, but when the cars don't make it to the dealership, it feels like a hot date called off at the last second. Sometimes, though, show cars aren't just pretty teases, but harbingers of real, viable automobiles. Here are the concept cars we expect to come to the showroom (though in an altered form), with our best guess on timing, specs and, when possible, price.

2013 Alfa Romeo 4C
Pray that Fiat gobbling up Chrysler is a gamble that pays off, so that nothing scuttles the plan to bring this car to our shores. The Alfa is nothing short of a mid-engine Italian masterpiece. While the horsepower figures don't jump off the page (250 from a turbocharged, 1.75-liter four-cylinder), the show car weighed less than 1800 pounds. That would make the 4C plenty quick, and at least as entertaining as the present Lotus Elise. For handling, think of the long-departed Toyota MR2 with, we'd wager, a far more gorgeous exhaust note. And, yes, there will be a convertible version too, likely in 2013.

2013 Jaguar C-X75 Of all the cars at the Paris Motor Show last September, we thought Jaguar's C-X75 seemed the least likely to see production. Well, we were wrong, but if you want to pick one up it'll cost you a cool $1.1 million. Formula One maker Williams will help to develop the chassis and supposedly the hybrid system as well. We won't see the twin gas-powered turbine system that was originally shown in Paris. Rather, there will be a conventional gasoline-powered motor (with specs yet to be determined) mated to a hybrid-drive mechanism. Still, if the C-X75 (it will get a new name, too) features four electric motors (one at each wheel), it will offer all-wheel drive and extremely high torque. Jaguar promises a run to 60 mph in under 3 seconds, a top speed of 200 mph and a range of 31 miles in electric-only mode.

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

The Evoque will go on sale this summer in most of the world, but American buyers will have to wait for an October debut in October. The engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit developed by Ford (yes, post-divorce) with power in the 240- to 250-hp range. The "terrain response" system that's integrated so nicely in the Ford Explorer will be stock here, as will AWD. In Europe there'll be diesel options and (the horror!) FWD-only editions. The Evoque marks Land Rover's need to get both more eco- and more tarmac-focused, so expect a vehicle that handles more like a sports sedan than a tank. Land Rover will offer a magnetically controlled damper setup, but only one transmission: a six-speed automatic. This crossover will come with a choice of three or five doors; both configurations seat five. Expect pricing to start around $45,000.

2012 Mazda6
When Mazda showed off the sexy Shinari concept at the 2010 L.A. Auto Show last December, it signaled a strong directional change. The Shinari is sexy; It looks less like a competitor to the Altima and Camry crowd and more like a Lexus fighter. The Shinari will lose some of that show-car edge when it goes on sale as the Mazda6 this December. But word is that it will sport an unconventional 2.2-liter diesel boasting 310 lb-ft of torque and a 40-plus mpg highway rating. The car's free-revving, 5200-rpm redline is especially unusual for diesels, but Mazda's goal was to emulate the character of its gasoline-powered cars, so this twin-turbocharged diesel seems less foreign to buyers who know the brand for quick-revving gas motors. Expect Mazda to offer an upgraded interior with more of a luxury feeling, too. If Mazda can pull all this off it has a motor to rival the Germans and a unique look to rival its Japanese competitors.

2013 Cadillac ATS
The Urban Concept Cadillac shown at last year's L.A. Auto Show was a head fake. Yes, maybe at some point Cadillac will do a small people-mover, but Caddy won't do a small-volume niche vehicle before it builds a genuine rival to the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and C-Class Mercedes-Benz (the Cadillac CTS is a bigger and heavier car than those Germans). The forthcoming ATS would rival the A4 and its ilk in size, but we have questions about how well it could compete. For cost reasons, the ATS's Alpha platform has to serve for both this smaller sedan, the next-gen CTS and the Chevy Camaro. That's not likely to lead to a great deal of success, as the goal with the ATS was to stick with a light chassis and smaller, high-boost motors. Whether that plan is still feasible is a good question, and the answer could decide the success or failure of the small Cadillac. And it's not just a question of performance; even luxury carmakers are scraping hard to find better fuel economy. With BMW ditching in-line-six engines for turbo fours, you can bet Cadillac has to find a way to dance to a similar tune.

2014 Audi Quattro Concept

The 30th anniversary of Audi's Quattro technology spawned this lovely homage. The car we'll likely get in the showroom, however, will be the product of a Porsche-engineered platform for the VW Bluesport Coupe and Convertible, the Porsche 550 and the Audi R5 (think of it as a not-so-poor-man's R8). The chassis goal for all three is exceptionally low weight, far lighter than anything presently in this class. Though all three will be sports cars, they'll achieve impressive fuel economy. Some speculate that the Audi motor will be the 340 hp five-cylinder from the forthcoming TTRS, along with Quattro AWD and DSG transmission, and that the yet-more-serious R5 will be priced above the extremely capable TTRS, and perhaps won't even be much cheaper than an R8. That gets interesting, because then you're talking about an Audi competing with the Porsche 911.

2012 Ford Vertrek Concept
What was called the Vertrek Concept at auto shows should roll off the assembly line in Louisville, Ky., next spring as the next Ford Escape. The current Escape is ancient, going without a design overhaul to its boxy body since 2001. Whatever can be saved from the Vertrek Concept will be, and it's safe to say that the next Escape is going to get a carlike ride more fitting for the dogfight in the crowded five-passenger crossover segment. Likely to be roomier and more refined, the new Escape should also get the 180-hp, 1.6-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost motor that's already deployed in a few models in Europe and is set to spread to production in the U.S.

2012 GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept

A "special packages" truck by GM like this one is on the way, but it may not be not as special as the concept, since word is that the production model sold next year won't get the Duramax diesel. Rock-crawlers will want the shortened 5-foot 10-inch bed as well as the wider (by 4.2 inches) track and taller ride height, bringing 11.8 inches of ground clearance. They'd also dig the Fox Racing Shox custom dampers and full-length underbody skidplate. In typical nondenial denial fashion, GM reps say the GMC All Terrain signals absolutely nothing. But the tea leaves suggest General Motors needs to follow Chrysler (with the Ram line) in truly separating GMC from Chevrolet.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell

Most of what appeared on this concept will see production, though heaven help us if that includes the paint. Like the Jaguar C-X75, the Benz will feature motors at each wheel and be AWD. But the E-Cell will be purely electric, with a huge 48-kilowatt-hour battery, instantaneous peak torque of 649 lb-ft, and the equivalent of 526 hp. No word on the range yet. Mercedes promises 0-to-60 acceleration in a little over 4 seconds, which is quite an accomplishment since the E-Cell is going to be considerably heavier than the V8-powered gas SLS. By the way, a neat trick of a four-motor car is that all power delivery can be controlled on location at each wheel, including overdriving a wheel for faster cornering, for instance.

2011 Mini Rocketman Concept

This car was shown at the Geneva Motor Show. It's a good bet that a slimmed-down Mini will come to market eventually, especially because Minis are getting larger, not smaller, these days. But in the nearer term the Mini is shedding some pounds. The new 2012 Coupe this fall will be a two-seat-only car that drops 200 pounds from the Cooper chassis. The show car was 6 inches wider than the Cooper, but that's unlikely for production. What is likely is the same 208-hp John Cooper Works engine and a base 1.6óliter motor good for about 175 hp.

2012 Scion FR-S

We've waited seemingly forever for the FT-86, the joint project of Subaru and Toyota on a light, inexpensive sports car, to morph from clay to metal. But the multi-year effort should finally bear fruit later this year when the Toyota puts its cards on the table in the form of a new Scion. We'll see a flat, boxer engine in 2.0-liter displacement, courtesy of Subaru, as well as rear-wheel drive. Power and pricing are up in the air, though the rumored low-$20,000 range would pit the small car against the V-6 Mustang and Camaro crowd. With these looks, the Scion will turn a lot of heads, and tuners are going to have a ton of fun trying to take Subaru WRX STi parts and bolt them onto their Scion.

2014 VW Bulli

Volkswagen's attempt to disguise a Chrysler minivan as a Wolfsburg-bred flower-power-mobile hasn't gone over very well, but the brand needs to sell in every segment in this country if it's going to grow. The Bulli would integrate well with VW's strategy of multiple models on a single platform. The five-passenger van would use the next-gen Golf as its underpinnings, and possibly would come as either a hybrid diesel or even an electric-only vehicle, like the concept shown in Geneva this past spring. And unlike the present Transporter, which has really ballooned from the compactness of the original Microbus of the 1950s and '60s, the Bulli is small and squat. Still, modern-day adventurers and those with a hint of nostalgia will hope VW saves the show-Bulli's rear seat that folds totally flat for in-car camping.

Pastor at NASCAR race gives thanks for "smokin' hot wife"

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) - Pastor Joe Nelms likely had folks gathered at the NASCAR Federated Auto Parts 300 race looking around for his "smokin' hot wife," after he thanked God for her during his pre-race invocation.

Nelms, pastor of Family Baptist Church in nearby Lebanon, Tennessee, borrowed a little bit from the film "Talladega Nights" and also from NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip in his prayer before the weekend race.

He thanked God for such things as "these mighty machines that you've brought before us," going on to cite the wonders of Dodges and Toyotas and Fords.

Prayerful thanks then were directed to, among other things,

"Sunoco Racing Fuel and Goodyear tires that bring performance and power to the track."

But it was when he got to his family that he had fans and drivers unsuccessfully holding back laughter.

"Lord I want to thank you for my smokin' hot wife tonight, Lisa, my two children, Eli and Emma, or as we like to call them the Little E's."

But he wasn't done. He prayed and blessed the drivers and said, "may they put on a performance worthy of this great track."

Then he borrowed NASCAR Hall of Famer Waltrip's trademark phrase in his closing: "In Jesus' name. Boogity, boogity, boogity. Amen."

Nelms was unavailable for comment Monday.

The Ford Raptor, You Break, You Buy

Recently Ford has released some amazing new models to the public that has swayed many new buyers to take an interest in the company. In fact their new line of cars has an extreme or performance version in almost every model line-up. From the turbo charger equipped Taurus to the Super charger equipped Raptor their line-up is sporting some pretty amazing credentials now. While the Taurus is more of a wolf in sheep clothing the raptor has nothing subtle about it, in fact even in the adds it is shown jumping through the desert. The problem is most of the buyers are not reading the manual.
While the Raptor may be a mean off road truck made to take more abuse then most people can throw at it, there are limits to its ability. More and more claims of frame damage have been flooding into Ford’s SVT division and the amazing thing is it’s not fords fault. It is understandable that people would be mad about breaking a $50K truck but there has to be some responsibility taken when you break something.  These trucks use a suspension travel of about 14 inches and can take some serious hit but when you hit a jump that for says can be done at 60MPH at 90…well that’s a different story. The suspension will max out on the landing and then the bump-stops are the last line of defense to stop the trucks energy. Once the Bump-stops are maxed, the chassis begins to take the brunt of the force and it will bend to release the pressure.
Lawsuits have sprung up under this issue and it doesn’t look like they will get very far. If you are going to claim you were going to fast is to make sure your buddy was not filming from behind you and putting the video up on Youtube. So far SVT’s official statement points out the obvious, if you broke it…you fix it. That may sound harsh since every one of us wants to get out and thrash one of these trucks right to the limit. This whole issue wraps back to an old saying in the racing world “if ya can’t afford to fix it , you can’t afford to race it” and this holds very true for this whole situation.

Toyota safety tech can take steering control to avoid impact

By Zach Bowman

According to The Detroit News, Toyota is working on a new pre-crash system that will actually take control and steer the vehicle to minimize impact in the event of an unavoidable collision. The system combines super-sensitive radar with a camera array in the front fascia to detect possible impacts. On-board computers then calculate the correct levels of braking and steering required to avoid the crash, and if the driver fails to act, the automatic system takes over.

Like most manufacturers, Toyota has the admirable goal of reducing injuries and fatalities in its products to zero, though The Detroit News reports that the automaker wouldn't comment on when we could expect to see the innovations on the road. The pre-crash steering is specifically designed to reduce the chance of a vehicle-pedestrian impact, and Toyota is also working on systems to accommodate drivers who have heart attacks while behind the wheel.

It's true that vehicle fatalities have seen a steady decline over the past few years thanks to improved safety technology, but as cars get safer, drivers become even more detached from the task at hand. Economists call it a Jevons Paradox; drivers have effectively consumed the safety benefits supplied by car companies to become lazier and less safe than they would be without the tech. Maybe Toyota should find a way to force drivers to put down their phones, shut off their infotainment screens and simply drive. Just a thought.

Range Anxiety Reducer: AAA Unveils Mobile EV Charging Trucks

In an effort to reduce range anxiety for owners of electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf, AAA announced it will offer North America’s first mobile charging roadside-assistance trucks. The announcement was made Monday at the Plug-In 2011 Conference and Exposition.

The roadside-assistance trucks will be equipped with the capability to provide Level 2 and Level 3 charging for auto club members when their EV's batteries become discharged. The trucks will be able to provide 10 to 15 minutes of charge time, which should provide enough juice for the EVs to travel three to 15 miles to a charging station to top off the charge, according to AAA.

“As the electric vehicle market continues to emerge, AAA is ready to help alleviate some range anxiety with the ability to provide a charge to electric vehicles on the roadside that gets drivers back on the go quickly,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA Automotive vice president.

Initially AAA will offer the mobile electric-vehicle charging trucks in six metropolitan areas across the U.S. Starting this summer AAA will begin testing its pilot program in the Portland and Seattle areas; the San Francisco Bay area; Los Angeles; Knoxville, Tennessee; and the Tampa Bay area of Florida.

According to AAA executive John Nielsen, AAA intends to expand the new service to interested members across the country. The pilot program will be used to research multiple technologies to determine which is best for different environments.

The roadside-assistance truck showcased at the conference uses a removable lithium-ion battery pack from Green Charge Networks, but other AAA vehicles will use generators powered by alternative fuels as well as other power sources.

Unlike mobile charging vehicles recently announced in other countries, AAA says its charging trucks will be similar to its other roadside assistance trucks and be able to provide traditional services including battery testing, jump starts and replacements, tire changes, fuel delivery, and lockout service.

“AAA’s mobile electric vehicle charging is intended to be a service similar to what AAA has provided to motorists with gas-powered vehicles for nearly a century,” Nielsen said. “When your vehicle runs out of fuel — whether it is traditional gasoline or electric fuel — AAA can provide you with a limited amount to help you safely reach a location where you can fill up your tank or your battery.”

Luxury Cars That Don't Guzzle Gas

mutually exclusive.
