Buying Parts Online with Credit Cards

Giving out your credit card information online is always daunting.  You can read all thepayment policies and privacy policies in the world, but the discomfort is stillthere. The higher the price and the more technical the product is, the scary itgets. The last thing you’d want is to pay a lot of money on a technical productthat does not work.  Pricey and technicalis exactly what auto parts are.  Althoughpaying with a credit card can seem suspicious, if you buy the right part from a legitcompany you can save a lot of money.

Before you ever provide credit card info, do a littleresearch on the company you’re purchasing from. Make sure they have those payment policies, and privacy policies statedclearly. Check out their online reviews.  See if they are a member of the BetterBusiness Bureau. You are about to give them a lot of valuable information about yourself. Thus, making sure you are dealing with a reputable company is very important.

Make sure you buy the right parts.  Online parts companies can only deliver thepart that you order.  If you get thewrong part, odds are they are going to charge you a restocking fee when yousend it back. You might first think this is unfair, but the company has to stopwhat they are doing and waste manpower and time to recheck your part back in, because ofa mistake you made.  A restocking fee is anindustry standard.  If you ever have a question about a part, feel free to call the company and talk to asales rep.  If the company is legit, itshould have a phone number clearly posted on the website.

If anything ends up going wrong, such as you receive thewrong part, or the part goes bad, then call the company.  They’re almost always willing to help you out, whether they replace it because it is under warranty or give you a deal on anew one.  I would never recommend thatyou do a charge back on your credit card. A lot of times credit card users think that all they have to do is callthe credit card company and cancel a transaction.  This may get the persons money back but whatthey do not know is that it is a red flag with their credit card company.  You only have so many charge backs beforethey cancel the credit card.

Another thing is that you need to make sure you have allyour credit card information right.  If you put downthe wrong billing information or type in the wrong credit card number, then the order may not getprocessed.  This could leave you with abroken car, wondering what happened to the part you ordered.

I know it seems a little scary to buy auto parts onlinebut if you do it right you can save a lot of cash. A lot of times the parts are exactly the same that you would get from the mechanic, but much cheaper.   Purchasingparts online is growing extremely fast and I highly recommend it.

See You Later, Flat Tires!

You’re driving on a hot summer day with your windows downand CD radio player on full-blast. All of a sudden you start to feel something seemsa little off and realize one of your tires is losing air. Whether you decide tofix the tire yourself on the side of the road or give AAA a call, even the bestNavigation Unit isn’t going to get you to your destination on time. Bridgestoneis hoping to end these situations all-together with their air-free tireconcepts shown here.

The color-choice of green would probably be customizable, but in concept form it alludes to the fact that the materials used are 100% recyclable. Its recyclable “thermoplastic” internal spokes are what gives these tires allof their strength and flexibility. The outer rubber on the tire offers a moretraditional tread surface required for use on our sometimes rough roads. Onecriticism has been the possibility of noise due to wind resistance incommercial use. However, if commercialized these tires are expected to besealed by a thin sidewall of rubber for these reasons. Each tire also only hasa weight capacity of up to 330 pounds, but innovations to this technology willundoubtedly be made in the future.

Benefits obviously include the recyclability factor, butthey are also safer and less wasteful because they eliminate the risk ofpunctures. Check out these tires in action on YouTube! (And by “in action”, Imean a girl riding a small scooter equipped with these tires five feet across astage).

BMW M Diesels

If you live in the states you’re not going to have to worryabout replacing a diesel injector or a diesel turbocharger for your new BMWM550d, because this car not going to be available for sale in the U.S.  Also not available is the other M Diesel carsthat BMW just announced; the X5 M50d, and the X6 M50d. You can go ahead and addthese vehicles to a long line of sweet rides available to rest of the world, but not available to us.

Ok… I have calmed down. I am no longer upset, and haverealized that even if I had the opportunity to buy one of these, I couldn’tafford it anyways.  So, instead ofwhining about not having one of these great cars, let’s discuss what makes themso great. Each one has all-wheel drive and is powered by what BMW callsPerformance Twin Turbo technology.  “TwinTurbo Technology,” Ha! These cars actually have three turbos.  Two smaller turbochargers deliver responsivepower down low in the rpm range, and then there is a bigger turbo that addstop-end thrust. The engine is a 3.0-litre inline six, which has 381-hp.  The M-Diesels will all go from 0 to 62-mph inless than 5.4 seconds, and gas mileage will range from 36.7 to 44-mpg.

The cars also get the M treatment on the outside of thevehicles too.  This includes side mirrorsand vent bars with a grey metallic finish. The exhaust is highlighted with trapezoidal tips, there is high-glossshadow line trim, and alloy wheels ranging from 19 to 20 inches.

No pricing was announced, and the vehicles will be debutedat the Geneva Motor show in March.

Vehicles And Spring Time 2012 is The Perfect Time For These Car And Truck Services

Is your car or truck acting sluggish after this winter in 2012? Chances are you are having either of these problems occurring. Or you could have more than one problem. I will explain here what I mean. Please pass this article to someone having these kind of problems.

Wet or Cracked Spark Plug Wires: Electrical spark will find its way to the closest path to a ground. Moisture is always a problem on just about anything. Im sure you all know this already. But wet or worn out spark plug wires will also foul out your plugs. So when you replace your spark plug cables you may have to also replace your sparkplugs. Sometimes after replacing your bad wires the engine will clean up your plugs for you.

Partially Plugged Catalytic Converter: I have seen a lot of times when a very hot exhaust system will hit the very cold water or slushy puddles and close off some of the back pressure. A clear exhaust system will show no restriction at a idle and read zero on a back pressure tester. Where as a partially plugged exhaust system will show two to three pounds.

A Dirty or Plugged Fuel Filter: I have noticed people seem to be a bit lazy when it comes to winter time car and truck maintenance. Most cars and trucks these days require at least 25 to 35 pounds of fuel pressure at an idle. A dirty or plugged fuel filter will drop these readings and cause a vehicle to run sluggish and some times very hard to start. If you let it go to long it could cause the fuel pump to overwork its self and cause early fuel pump failure.

Cracked Ignition Module or Coil Packs: Now this problem is similar to the spark plug wires mentioned above. Just like spark plug wires electrical voltage will find its closest path to a ground. The best way to have these problems fixed is to have an engine diagnostics perform by a engine performance expert and make sure he or she is a ASE certified technician in that field.

I hope these Spring time tips for your car or truck will help you get that zoom back in your ride! Make sure you find a reputable auto repair shop to perform these checks so they wont try to take your hard earned money. Its feels like a car title loan place sneaking up on you and stealing your ride. Happy Driving!

Can You Guess the Function of a Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor?

You may have never asked yourself what is a tire pressure monitor sensor. These sensors do exactly what you’d expect; they monitor thepressure within your tires. However, because these sensors are battery powered, over time they will fail and you will need to replace or know how to repair tire pressure monitor sensors. Don’t worry too much about this, when the timecomes you will be warned via the little TPMS on your dash and it is a fairlycheap fix. A little fact about tire pressure is that if you are driving ontires that are 10% under inflated, you will see a 1% decrease on your gas mileage.

As of 2007, the NHTSA requires the installation of thesesensors on all vehicles. There are two types of these sensors, direct and indirect.Direct tire pressure monitoring sensors are located either inside or outsidethe tire and they physically measure the pressure. After doing so, they reportthis information to the instrument cluster of the vehicle. Newer vehicles can displayreal-time pressures of each tire while driving or parked. Indirect sensors onthe other hand don’t actually detect the tire pressure, but they “infer” thepressure through various factors. The main factor is the rotational speed of each individual wheel. If a tire has less pressure, the diameter will be slightlysmaller and in turn will spin a bit faster.

Regardless of which type of sensor your vehicle uses, if that warning light comes on DON'T just pretend its not there and put off the job. It isimportant, and cheap, to fix this issue. Not only can theysave you a few extra dollars at the pump, but if they are working properly you will have lower emissions, increased handling of your vehicle, and you won't have to worry about failing that state inspection coming up. Also an underinflated tire is the leading cause of tire failure, so having your sensors inworking order will increase your tire life.

A Good Year at Ford

It’s been a good year for Ford. They did have to deal withsome recalls involving wheel bearing hub assemblies on some sedans and rustingfuel tanks containing fuel pump assemblies on trucks. However, like other autocompanies, Ford had a very strong year and will be giving out bonuses to theirworkers for the first time since the financial meltdown. Ford has gained steam thispast year selling more than 2 million cars for the first time since 2007, andthey show no signs of stopping with their completely remodeled 2013 lineup.

The Ford Escape, Fusion, Taurus and Focus will all show dramatic departures in styling from previous years in 2013. I’m really likingthe 2013 Ford Fusion whose front-end (to me) resembles that of an Aston Martin. The Fusion will come not only in a gasoline-powered model, but in electricplug-in and hybrid versions as well. The Ford Escape, which has kept its boxystyling since it was introduced over ten years ago, will now resemble more of across-over with its new curves and smoother lines.

What might be the coolest part of future Ford automobiles isthe technology that they will be equipped with. Ford’s MyFord Touch and SYNCsystem not only syncs all of your devices to the vehicle but takes it one stepfurther with voice-activated commands. You will now be able to tell your carwhat song to play, have it read you your text messages, and also reply to thosemessages through voice commands. New safety features include inflatable rearsafety belts and vehicle sensors used to monitor blinds spots and givecollision warnings. You can simply set a cruise control speed and the distanceyou want to maintain from the vehicle in front of you, and the car willautomatically slow down to avoid collisions. Other cool features includecap-less fuel tanks as well as the ability to control the color of dash and interior ambientlighting (blue, red, green, you name it!). Will 2012 be another great year forFord?

What is a Transmission Gearbox?

A Gearbox is a machine-driven process ofshifting energy from one device to another. A transmission gearbox is most frequentlypositioned at the junction point of a power shaft, and is used to generate aright angle change in direction. It provides a range of gearing to multiply theengine’s torque.  A direct connectionfrom the engine to the road wouldn’t provide enough torque at the wheels tomove the car.  Thus, the gearbox’smultiplication of the toque is what helps overcome the car’s inertia and getsit moving.  I hope the gearbox is betterat multiplication then I am, or my car is not going anywhere.

There are three main types of gearboxes; Front Engine-FrontWheel Drive, Front Engine-Rear Wheel Drive, and Rear Engine-Rear WheelDrive.  A FWD drive is condensed and willcommonly contain the gears, the final drive, and the differential. There aretwo shafts, an input shaft and an output shaft. The gears are constantlymeshing but just one gear is secured to the shafts at all time.

The RWD gearbox has three shafts.  Just like the FWD it has an input and anoutput but the RWD also contains a lays half shaft.  The input and output shafts run parallel toeach other and the lays half sits below the two and overlaps them.  The input shaft drives the lay shaft througha pair of meshing gears.  This act iscontinuous and goes by the term, “constant mesh.” This term does not apply toyour friend who constantly just wears mesh basketball shorts. The lay shaft andoutput shaft have a pair of gears rotating on them and from the constant meshgearing onwards it behaves just like the FWD gearbox. The main differencebetween a FWD and RWD gearbox is what is known as a direct ratio, which is whena system locks the two shafts together and bypasses the gear cluster.

Transmission gearboxes are either automatic, manual, orcontinuous.  A manual transmission can bea sliding mesh or a constant mesh style. The sliding mesh uses straight cutgears and requires the driver to time the change from one speed toanother.  If it is not timed right therewill be a loud grinding sound and increase the rate of wear and tear on thegears teeth, and it will also cause you to yell at your girlfriend.  The constant mesh system has diagonally cutgears that are permanently meshed. This creates a smoother transition betweenspeeds.  The constant mesh is used mostlyby agricultural equipment and race cars.

Super Bowl Car Commercials

Cooling fans suck, radiator fans blow, and Super Bowl fans are known for loving commercials. A lot of times they are better than the actual game.  Whether they are funny like the BudweiserFrogs, sexy like the Cindy Crawford Pepsi spot, or a marketing masterpieceresembling the Apple 1984 commercial, they’re always entertaining.  The auto industry has always been a keyplayer in Super Bowl ads and they will continue to be this year.

Volkswagen found a lot of success last year with acommercial staring a youngster dressed up like Darth Vader.  The commercial not only ranked high for theSuper Bowl, but it also won some awards for best commercial of the year.  The company hopes to grow on this commercial’ssuccess with another Star Wars themed spot. In this year’s advertisement, VW ups the cuteness from a kid to puppies.Check out a teaser of the commercial CLICK HERE

Chevy also released one of their Super Bowl commercials.  It’s called “Chevy Happy Grad.”  The commercial is a humorous romp created bysome miscommunication. Now, I can continue with pompous movie critic phrasessuch as “humorous romp,” or you can just watch the commercial CLICK HERE

Kia plans to air a sixty second commercial, and I don’t knowwhat it’s officially titled but it should be called, “A 12 Year Old Boy’sDream.”  It features UFC Fighter Chuck Lidell,Victoria’s Secret Model Adriana Lima, and Motley Crue.  It’s too bad 12 year olds can’t drive cars, and it is also a shame that I cannot figure out how to put those two littledots over the “o” and “u” in “Motley Crue.”

Other car companies that are going to buy commercial time onthe Super Bowl are Honda, Acura, Hyundai, and Toyota.  And,  for the very first time in the history of the company, Lexus is also going to run an ad during thegame,

Top 10 Common Car Problems

Everyone at some point or another has had trouble with theirvehicle. It usually comes at an unexpected and extremely inconvenient time too:when your late for work, need to meet an old friend for dinner, or just spentyour savings on Christmas gifts for the kids. Maybe it's exhaust smoke or no pressure from the fuel pump. Hopefully if this has happened toyou it was just a minor problem but let’s face it, even minor car problems endup costing hundreds of dollars out of your pocket. Out of all the possible carproblems you could have, the most common (and thankfully one of the easiest to fix) isa flat tire. Hopefully you’ll have a spare and hopefully someonehas taught you how to use that contraption in your trunk.

The second most popular car problem is said to be wornbrakes which is also another easy fix. Maybe it’s not something you can fix onthe side of the road, but at least your bill at the mechanic shop won’t becompletely unexpected. The next most common issue with cars is an electrical problem which can be one of many things. It could be something simple like ablown fuse in the dash. Another common electric problem is your key failing tostart the ignition which leads us into the fourth most common car problem:ignition trouble. This could be one of the most annoying issues because it iscompletely unexpected, and chances are you are our running errands and findyourself stranded with no ride and a huge headache. Unfortunately, ignitionproblems can range from something minor to very serious and you probably won’t knowthe extent of the damage until the mechanic gives you that dreaded call.

Number five is worn shocks, which can create a bumpier ridethan normal. Number six? Dead batteries can be caused by age, but many timesthey are caused by us overusing them. Ever forget to turn off an interior lightwhen leaving the car for the night? How about charging a phone or listening tothe radio while the cars off? Both of these can hurt the life of your battery. After reviewing this list, it seems you can either beprepared for many of these issues (knowing how to use a spare tire) or they canbe avoided through proper maintenance. Check below for the rest of the top 10 list!

Bio-ethanol May not Be The Biggest Hit But it Packs a Punch

Over the past few years car companies have been pushing theuse of alternative fuels for vehicles. Most of these have gone unnoticed, mainly due to the fact that they are less potent than gasoline.  The fuel pump and fuel pump assembly areable to handle Ethanol without issue and the engines can as well.

The facts about Ethanol are easily seen, while the fuel maynot work well in normal engines but once a few key components are changed towork with ethanol…watch out! The main issue caused by the way ethanol ignites, newinjector timing and ignition are the main issues. Companies like Honda or Toyotahave not really tried to push this set up because the cost to the averageconsumer would be around $3000 and not many of us are just willing to drop thatmuch coin.

The companies that have been able to take advantage of theethanol change are companies like Ferrari or Koenigsegg. While most of us willnever be able to afford anything that these companies off…especially Koenigseggwho mainly makes cars that cost close to a million dollars, the technology isthere for the taking.  New technology isalways showcased in the more expensive cars and trickles down to the rest ofus, usually in the Mercedes S class. Ferrari recently released the FF which isa 4WD that makes 650HP but tune it for Ethanol and that number jumps to around875HP. That’s right no forced induction just a good tune. Koenigsegg tuned theAgera R from 927HP up to 1,100HP just by using Ethanol and there are many otherexamples of this fuel doing great things. Maybe sooner than later it willbecome main stream…oh and did I mention that it is a renewable fuel source.

Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone Case

I know how to repair steering parts and I know how to diagnose a failed turbocharger, but I cannot figure out how to keep my iPhonecase scratch free.  Yes, the whole reasonwhy you buy a case is so that it gets the scratches instead of the phone, but Iam a car guy so any type of scratches bothers me.  Well, it looks like it annoyed some other, more important car guys too.  Nissan hascome out with an iPhone case that heals itself from scratches.

The Japanese car company says this case is the first one tohave “self-healing technology.” At first this sounded unbelievable, like somethingout of a science fiction movie.  This isa phone case, not an alligator’s tail. Nevertheless, as I read more about thecase it sounded more plausible.

The iPhone case’s outer layer of paint is the same scratchproof paint Nissan uses on some of their vehicles.  The active ingredient that makes this stuffmagical is called polyrotaxane.  (It’sword like polyrotaxane that make me happy to be a writer and not a reporter. Icouldn’t pronounce that correctly if you gave me a hundred tries.) When thecase gets dinged the chemicals flexible structure reacts by reverting back toits original state.  This action makes itlook like the case is healing itself.   Smallscratches can take less than an hour to heal, while deeper cuts can take up toa week.

The case is currently on a trial run in Europe.  If tests go well and demand is high, Nissanwill bring the iPhone case to market.  Iam not sure why they are spending all this money on testing these cases.  They could have just given my 3 year old nephewone of these things for a day and found out its true power.

Saturn Compressor AC Line Update

Over the years there are updates to parts just like thereare to car models. For every model year that a vehicle is in production thereare small changes that are more than skin deep. The AC compressor just like other automotive AC parts may change as the years go by. Sometimes a car company goes under andthe aftermarket has to take over the production of the replacement parts. Inthe case of Saturn that is exactly what happened, when the company closed itsdoors it left many of its vehicles owners out in the cold when it came toparts. Maybe out in the cold is the wrong term to use, out in the heat isbetter since the OEM AC compressor was no longer available the aftermarket didwhat it could.

The solution to the lack of supply was to find a compressorthat bolted into the same location as the original Saturn compressor. This isnice in theory but the problem arose when a compressor was found, the compressorcould bolt on but the AC lines would not hook up. The solution was found injust changing them out and sending the update out whenever a Saturn L series orVue compressor was sold.

Each one of the replacement compressors was sold with a setof the high and low side ac lines what could be easily swapped into the system. This simplistic fix is a great example of how the aftermarket is not just abunch of cheap parts but more a community of vendors who are working to createa market for anything that has a need.

"You May Not Run Out of Gas" - Youngstown, OH

In light of news that Massachusetts has been charging $275to fight a traffic ticket whether you win or lose, I was wondering what other ridiculousregulations were going on out there in the car world. I’m not talking about requirementsthat ensure your fuel injectors and turbochargers are in good working condition.I’m talking about some ridiculous, yet very real, traffic regulations such asit being illegal for a driver in Alabama to be blindfolded while operating avehicle. This is obviously so dangerous that it should be illegal, but I wonderwhat happened down the line that this had to become an actual law.

Some of these laws are so old and just haven’t yet beenabolished, while others are due to not-so-smart people doing some not-so-smartthings. In California, no vehicle without a driver may exceed 60 mph. Also, women may not drive in a house coat. In Arcadia, CA peacocks have the right ofway to cross any street, and in Temecula ducks have the right of way at alltimes. In San Diego, it is illegal to shoot jackrabbits from the back of a streetcar. Is your car getting dirty? Don’t go to Downey, CA where it is illegal to washyour car in the street.

Head over to the east coast and you’ll find some prettycrazy regulations as well. In Hartford, CT it is illegal to cross the street ifyou happen to be walking on your hands. In Marietta, GA it is illegal to spitfrom a car or bus, but you can from a truck! In Tennessee, driving is NOT to bedone while asleep. In Virginia Beach, if you are drunk and not driving, but thedriver is drunk as well, you can BOTH receive a DUI. What if you happen to hita pedestrian in Sarasota, FL? Be prepared to pay the $78 fine.

While many of these regulations were made many, many yearsago and just haven’t been abolished, they are all still active laws in theirrespective states. While I don’t think that a woman would be ticketed fordriving a car without a man waving a flag in front of it (yes, this is still “illegal”in Louisiana), it is interesting to read some of these outdated traffic laws. Andback to Massachusetts charging $275 to fight a ticket. They say these fees arenecessary as thousands of people appeal tickets which are causingrising administrative costs. Sounds to me like pressure to just pay your ticketwhether it was deserved or not, and I don’t think you should be charged todefend yourself in court.

Why do Vehicles Have Tow Ratings

We have all seen the truck commercials with bold claims andflashing graphics but what are they all getting at. What is all this towing ofhuge boats up hills and pulling stumps out of the ground? Well this is not toshow the diesel fuel pump or diesel injectors are working, no this is togive an idea of what the truck can haul. Most commercials show a “Do Not Attempt”warning to keep people from destroying the truck once they buy it. The fact ofthe matter is that trucks can really only haul a specific kind of weight atvery specific speeds.

Most trucks have a towing rating that can handle towing acar or truck behind it but what are the dangers of going over the tow rating?First off is the danger of extended braking distance, while some trailers havetheir own braking system most use free spinning wheels. The added weight of thetrailer means more work for the brake system to handle and that translates togreater stopping distance. This means that the driver must think differentlythen he normally would. Also it means that the brakes will heat up and begin to“fade” faster. Brake fade is when the heat cannot be dissipated and the padsbecome molten. When this happens the braking ability drops to almost zero.

The next huge issue for towing capacity is what the frame ofthe truck can handle the added weight. Now must trucks are built with a verysturdy frame that can handle a good 10,000lbs more than the trucks weight. Whenthis weight is increased the stress on the “back bone” of the vehicle can bepushed past its rating. Exceeding the rating can cause the frame of the vehicleto bend or even break.

The ratings given by the manufacturer are there for a reasonand they do give a bit of flexibility but should never be exceeded. There aremany other issues that can arise when the tow rating is exceeded which can notonly be dangerous but also kill your gas mileage!
