Former European and Commonwealth 400m Champion Iwan Thomas recently raced 3.8 miles around central London against the Alfa Romeo MiTo, starting and finishing at Tower Bridge.

Iwan Thomas said: "I'm a 400 metre runner not a four miler, but I think I can do it. I need to pace myself and try not to get lost. Hopefully there won't be too many coach loads of tourists blocking my path. My competitive instincts are still with me, I've got to win."

Powered by the 1.3 JDTM-285bhp, the Alfa Romeo MiTo was driven by European and Commonwealth 110m hurdles Champion Andy Turner, and World and European Long Jump medallist Chris Tomlinson taking the role of navigator.

Driver Andy Turner said: "I'm pretty confident that we can beat Iwan but it looks like he's been back in training for the race. There will be no time for viewing the landmarks of London, my focus is on winning and we've got to hope that the traffic isn't too heavy and we don't hit too many red lights. My season is going very well and I have high hopes for the World Championships, but if I don't beat Iwan Thomas then I'm never going to live it down."

Navigator Chris Tomlinson said: "The pressure is definitely on my map reading skills, London isn't the easiest place to get around and we're not allowed a Sat Nav, just a good old fashioned map. I know we have to pass a number of famous landmarks such as St Paul's, the Bank of England and the Gherkin which will be a help, but I wish I was driving."

Whilst the result is in, they have not been announced, but instead throughout the UK Athletics season, Alfa Romeo will give a series of clues as to who won, inviting athletics fans to guess to winner.

Alfa Romeo will publish a series of films who plots the progress of both man and machine throughout the challenge, with the full race and finish to be shown on a giant screen to crowds gathered for the culmination of the season at the Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace on Friday 5th August 2011.

Viewers who successfully guess the winner will be given the chance to win an exclusive Alfa Romeo bike, worth over £550. The Alfa Romeo Stradale Touring mountain bike is designed by Alfa Romeo Centro Stile in Italy and manufactured by Italian bike maker Compagnia Ducale.
