BMW Real Time Traffic Information
Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) is an enhanced BMW ConnectedDrive feature and is available on all new BMW models included for free when customers order the BMW Professional navigation system and Bluetooth telephone preparation with telematics.
BMW drivers will also be able to view RTTI remotely during route planning on the BMW Routes website which can be accessed from any internet-enabled device.
RTTI provides accurate details on traffic situations in real time meaning the driver can be assured that they are travelling on the most time efficient route. The information provided is based on a number of sources. It combines TPEG (Transport Protocol Expert Group) with the GSM cellular network and a SIM card built into the vehicle allows the data to be transmitted in real time.
The traffic information is displayed on the Navigation map, utilising a colour-coding system to indicate how traffic is flowing. Road networks can be divided into distances down to 500m with automatic updates every three minutes, meaning the driver can monitor whether the situation is improving or getting worse.
With the destination guidance active, the system will also monitor traffic flow away from the route in order to calculate the most time efficient route, recommending for or against alternative routes. This information gives the driver to opportunity to accept the traffic jam if alternative routes offer no time saving benefits. It will also ensure that any alternatives routes will not redirect the driver into heavier traffic. All major road networks and motorways in the UK are covered by the system as well as pan-European networks for journeys abroad.
