Ford has announced plans to introduce ultra-fuel efficient versions of the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta to Europe during 2012.

At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Ford will show two new ultra-efficient models featuring advanced fuel saving technology: the new Ford Focus ECOnetic Technology, featuring the first lean NOx adsorbing technology in a diesel with emissions of 89g/km and the new Ford Fiesta ECOnetic Technology - the first Fiesta to feature Auto-Start-Stop technology - achieving 87g/km.

The Ford Focus boasts fuel consumption of 83.1mpg, which makes it to most fuel efficient non-hybrid C segment car, while the Ford Fiesta achieves 85/5mpg.

The Frankfurt Motor Show will also showcase a Ford Focus powered by the new 3 cylinder 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine, offering high levels of fuel efficiency and strong performance. .

In order to achieve the high levels of fuel efficiency, the Ford Fiesta and Focus ECOnetic technology include the following technology:

  • Auto-Start-Stop – Ford Auto-Start-Stop system – which will be available in every Ford car-line from end of 2012 – automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is at idle – at a traffic light, for example – and restarts the engine when the driver wants to move off, saving the fuel wasted while the vehicle is stationary. This can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 10 per cent in urban driving.
  • Smart Regenerative Charging – The Ford Fiesta and Focus ECOnetic Technology feature a new version of the system, which increases the alternator output when the vehicle either brakes or decelerates. This will convert kinetic energy of the vehicle into electric energy without consuming fuel. The electric current is then used to recharge the battery, to be used by the electrical systems.
  • Ford Eco Mode – Ford Eco Mode is a driver information system that helps drivers change habits and change their driving style to become more economical, offering fuel savings of around 10 per cent. Software monitors driving behaviour, providing clear feedback to the driver about their eco-driving performance, along with tips about how to save more fuel. A flower graphic is displayed in the instrument cluster to allow drivers to track progress with gear shifting, anticipation and speed.
  • Gearshift Indicator– The Shift Indicator Light is displayed in the instrument cluster, alerting drivers to when they could reduce fuel consumption by shifting into a higher gear.

The Ford Fiesta and Focus ECOnetic Technology models are powered by the 1.6 litre Ford Duratorq TDCi diesel engine, which produced 95PS in the Ford Fiesta and 105PS in the Focus. The engine has been optimised to enhance fuel efficiency with a new injection system as well as friction reducing features, a more efficient combustion system, enhanced cooling and a revised engine management.

Paired to the 1.6 litre diesel is Ford's six speed Durashift manual transmission. The high efficiency design has been optimised to eliminate losses from friction, using special low friction transmission oil and a revised final drive ratio which improved fuel economy at cruising speeds.
